Speed & movement

Speed is trainable through quality sprint reps and movement skill, not grinding.

Speed is the most prized athletic quality in baseball and it's genuinely trainable — but it's built from quality sprint reps and movement skill, not from grinding. Fast, fresh, full-effort, then rest.

Tired legs train slow legs.

Agility is speed with a brain attached — change of direction plus reads, best trained live. And for young kids, most "conditioning" should simply be play: keep-away, chase games, baserunning games deliver more honest conditioning than laps ever will, and the kids beg for them.

The thing to design out is junk volume. Endless running makes kids more tired, not faster — speed wants freshness, and the dose that helps is optimal, not maximal.

How it shows up

  • Sprint short, full-effort, full-recovery — quality over quantity.
  • Build conditioning through games kids love, and end practice on one.
  • Train agility with reads — a cone can't juke you back.
