Throwing & pitching

A whole-body throw and a healthy arm; velocity is an output, never the target.

Throwing is the most trainable and most injurable skill in the game — so it splits into a build half and a protect half, and both are the coach's job.

The arm is the last link in the chain, not the engine.

The build half: the throwing motion is a total-body sequence — legs and hips drive, the trunk rotates, and the arm finishes what the body started. Then accuracy and command: putting it where you want, where consistency beats velocity every day of the week. Pitching is the same throw on a mound, plus balance, the stride, and command under pressure.

The protect half: arm care and warm-up as routine, and the non-negotiable that sits over everything — volume and fatigue management. A tired arm is done for the day, no matter the count. Velocity is an output of a healthy, well-built thrower. It's never the target.

How it builds

  • Build the throw from the ground up — the arm finishes, it doesn't lead.
  • Warm up with play, then arm care, before any hard throwing.
  • Respect the counts and rest days — the full guidelines live in How much throwing?
  • The Pitch Count & Rest widget does the math for you at the field.
